An effective and adaptable type of grinding machine is the rod mill. They offer a simple feed pocket, reduce feed ball size, and generate fine particles between 0.1 mm and 2 mm.
Rod mills are used to grind ore and other materials containing minerals. These machines are frequently employed as the initial crushing or grinding stage prior to a ball mill. An attrition mill works by applying impact forces to mill material. The particles are broken down through rubbing and shearing action. A range of grinding media is used, depending on the type of feed to be processed. Most attrition mills use a medium of three to ten mm.
High speed attrition mills produce fine powders. They operate at speeds of 400 to 2,000 rpm. This allows them to continuously produce fine powders from two to five microns in size.

Semi-autogenous mills and SAG mills are also used in pre-processing grinding circuits. Grinding mills are driven by large high horsepower electrical motors. This enables them to grind coarse ore without the need for dedicated grinding media.
A typical comminution circuit for Ni-Co sulfide ore is shown in Figure 2.2.7. The main difference between SAG and ball mills is that the latter is usually filled with steel balls to increase its processing capacity.
Another difference between SAG and ball mills is their size. SAG mills are larger in diameter and length. While ball mills are smaller in size, their grinding ratio is much higher.
